The visitor shared his awkward encounter with a urine rack on Reddit, a common but disconcerting feature of public urinals in Australia.

A tourist has revealed his confusion about a unique feature found in Australian men’s public urinals, leaving locals and fellow travelers confused.

The visitor shared on Reddit his awkward encounter with a urinal grate, which sits atop the base of the urinal and is designed to stand on while urinating.

“I visited your beautiful country and had a great time,” he began. “But I didn’t know how the fuck to pee in this thing.”

The post quickly sparked a flood of responses, with Australians chiming in to explain the purpose of the grates and why they are vital to keeping bathrooms clean.

A fellow tourist admitted that he too was taken aback by the design when he began his trip to Australia.

“I was in Australia last month. ‘I didn’t realize you were supposed to stand on the grate and (use the bathroom),’ she wrote.

»I stood on the tiles and another man came in and stood on the grate. I said, ‘I meant no disrespect, sir. I didn’t realize you had to stand on the grate. He said, “It’s okay, man, I’m just jealous of the guys who get to stay back there.”

The funny exchange led to more Australians shedding light on the mystery of the bars.

How do you use a urine rack?

“The goal of the grate is so that errant spurts and drips don’t end up on the ground,” one Reddit user explained.

‘Do you see the drops on the ground? This is what being on the grill is supposed to help.

‘Obviously other people who have used this urinal don’t know how to use it either. Stand on the fence.

Others pointed out that while grates are meant to keep bathrooms cleaner, they aren’t always foolproof.

‘I’m a cleaner and I totally agree that it doesn’t matter where you go, because it ends up on the floor anyway. Hope this helps,” one commenter joked.

The discussion also revealed that similar grids exist in New Zealand, although they remain equally baffling to some Kiwis.

“I have no idea,” admitted one New Zealander. “We have them in New Zealand and I’ve always hidden in the bushes.”

Despite the initial confusion, the original tourist praised the locals for their relaxed attitude and sense of humor.

“What a wonderful group of people,” he added.

The women were also happy to join in the fun exchange.

“As an Australian woman, I have no idea if some of these answers are true or just pulling the leg (pun intended) of the foreigner.”

“I have never been happier to be a woman,” echoed another. ‘Why does that seem so disgusting?’

For travelers heading to Australia, the message is clear: stand at the grate and aim carefully, and you won’t leave any evidence of your visit.

Or as one commenter put it: “It’s not rocket science, mate, but it’s definitely Aussie science.”
