Located just outside Hobart, Mortimer Bay is a stunning destination with pristine nature.

If you prefer secluded walks and quiet hideaways to packed tourist beaches, then the magic of Mortimer Bay is definitely for you.

Located in Hobart, Mortimer Bay Reserve is a picturesque corner of Tasmania that attracts photographers and nature lovers to enjoy stunning sunsets and scenic walks.

The Tangara Trail is a stunning 12km hike that runs through the reserve with views of the coast and allows access to those on foot, mountain bikes and also horseback.

But it’s the incredible sunsets on the beach that leave visitors speechless.

The region is a favorite of professional and amateur photographers for its soft lighting and enchanting twilight that gives way to vividly memorable sunsets.

And dusk is when the beauty is just beginning as the natural light display of the Aurora Australis adorns the southern night skies with mesmerizing rays of color that rival even the Northern Lights.

The bay also features what could possibly be “Australia’s most photographed fence”, a weathered, changing-looking railing that extends in a westerly direction along the water and is a prominent feature in many images of the bay.

Visitors love how peaceful and quiet the adjacent reserve is; one reviewer commented that the “pristine” setting created an “amazing” and unforgettable experience.

Exploring Rockpool is never boring.

Dream sunsets with best friends.

Explore the rock pools in search of marine life or simply relax and enjoy memorable sunsets.

The reserve itself is “teeming with birds” and views reach as far as Mount Wellington in the distance.

Those who explore the beautiful coastline may also discover all sorts of small marine species, such as brightly colored starfish and crabs lurking in the rock pools.

One visitor was even lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins playing nearby.

Travelers visiting the area can stay at The Boat Shed in Sandford, a comfortable, modern-style cottage overlooking Ralph’s Bay, just 1.5 km away.

Touch of the MO cafe is a 2.5 hour and 10km walk (or a quick drive) from the bay and offers “excellent” coffee and some impressive looking brownies that one customer called “to die for.”

Just a 30-minute drive from Hobart Airport, Mortimer Bay is easily accessible and is one of those rare, romantic places that promises to leave you with what one visitor called “that feeling of being lost in a dream.”
