Travelers and local residents of a small town say their public toilets are in an unpleasant state after one person described them as "the worst toilets in the world."

A traveler visiting Wellsford, a town 77 kilometers northwest of Auckland in New Zealand, filed a complaint with the local council after visiting the facilities.

It is believed that the bathrooms have wet floors, poorly hidden graffiti and constantly smell of urine and marijuana.

Rodney Local Board member Colin Smith told Stuff NZ that the condition of the toilets had deteriorated due to the influx of traffic to those particular toilets.

This was due to the fact that the local service stations applied the "customer only" policies.

Smith said the baths were popular as they were in front of a busy bus stop, but it had become a "disgrace."

"Wellsford has deteriorated and we are losing business since we joined the super city," he said.

Smith also said they are the only public toilets available between Auckland and Whangarei, a 158km trip.

A Wazza & # 39; s Coffee and Icecream employee, a few doors from the bathroom, Warren Marshall, said complaints are common.

"We have around 25,000 more cars here on weekends," Marshall said.

The awful state of the bathroom was affecting the small cafeteria business, as travelers often stop to go to the bathroom and have a coffee, but flee after visiting the bathroom.

The board of management and maintenance management of the Auckland board, Agnes McCormack, said the board bathrooms are cleaned as often as necessary.

He said council cleaners can vary the frequency of their maintenance, depending on location, knowledge of the site and service requests.

Research is currently underway to improve the Wellsford baths.
