Last month, Victorian tourist Bridget Harvey was out for a drive on Magnetic Island near Townsville in north Queensland when she lost control on a twisty uphill road.

“I lost control on a curve and collided head-on with a bus coming in the opposite direction,” he said in a GoFundMe appeal.

“They knocked me unconscious and hurt me pretty badly.”

The June 7 crash broke and twisted his left leg in three places, requiring the use of a pole and large screws at a hospital 1,500 miles from home.

The 33-year-old woman suffered a head injury that also broke her elbow and fractured her eye socket, nasal cavity and base of her skull.

“I was lucky that two doctors from the hospital were on the bus I crashed into and were able to help me immediately,” he said.

Her injuries were so severe that she had to be airlifted to Townsville University Hospital while on holiday with her boyfriend Anthony Main.

Ms Harvey, who lives in Ballarat, north-west of Melbourne, is not covered by the Transport Accident Commission because it only provides financial support if an accident occurs in her home state of Victoria.

“There will be a lot of outlays and lost revenue,” he said.

As a contracted counselor and art therapist at a perinatal and parenting center, she also has no paid leave, making her life especially difficult as she endures months of rehabilitation to deal with broken bones and a brain injury.

“I’m hoping to burn through a good chunk of my savings to get through this and I’ve been fortunate to have a good job lately that has helped me survive a setback like this,” he said.

Her GoFundMe campaign has so far raised $4,170 since it was launched on June 13, and Harvey hopes to raise $7,000 to ease the pressure on her family and boyfriend.

The money will go towards rehabilitation, crutches, accommodation, transport back to Victoria and medical bills.

“Thank you so much again for all the love and support. You are helping me to do well in my physical therapy and therapies and to stay positive about recovery. I appreciate you all so much,” she said.
