Michelle Yeoh does her best to keep humanity alive in the official full trailer for the Disney+ series American born Chinese.
The coming-of-age show that combines action and comedy will launch on May 24 and is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. The eight-episode project features roles for Everything Everywhere Everything at once stars Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and James Hong, alongside fellow cast members Daniel Wu, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han and Sydney Taylor.
Courtesy of series creator Kelvin Yu (Bob’s burgers) and director Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), American born Chinese tells the story of an ordinary schoolboy, played by Ben Wang, whose path changes when he meets Wei-Chen (Jim Liu), the son of a mythological god.
“I’m not from this world,” Liu explains in the trailer as his character reveals he’s not actually an exchange student. “I need your help in my quest to stop the uprising.”
Yeoh plays a goddess named Guanyin and appears at crucial moments in the footage as she tries to convey the seriousness of the situation to Wang’s character. “You have to stop it or everyone will perish,” says Yeoh. “The fate of your world hangs in the balance.”
Cretton and Yang executive produce along with Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Erin O’Malley and Asher Goldstein. American born Chinese is produced by 20th Television.
Everything Everywhere Everything at once was the big winner at this year’s Academy Awards, where Yeoh and Quan’s Oscar wins were among the seven trophies the film scooped from co-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
In her review for The Hollywood Reporterpraised Angie Han American born Chinese’s “incredibly entertaining and sometimes moving results.”
All eight American born Chinese episodes will be streaming on Disney+ from May 24.
