What was going to be a joyous occasion turned into a nightmare when a North Carolina groom, Tyrek Burton, was tragically shot and killed just hours after his wedding. The 37-year-old man was outside the wedding venue when a possible road rage incident escalated, leading to his death, according to the Greensboro Police Department.
The incident occurred late on Saturday, October 12, and was reported shortly before 9 p.m. Police responded to the scene at an events center, where they found Burton in the parking lot with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, Burton later died from his injuries, according to a police news release.
“This was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of his life, and it turned into something tragic,” said Brittany Burton, Tyrek’s sister, in an interview with WGHP.
Just seven hours earlier, Tyrek had married Kiara Holloway, according to local news reports. The couple had been together for over a decade and shared a deep bond, eventually marrying in a celebration that quickly turned into a nightmare.
Family members explained that Burton had briefly left his wedding reception before being followed by another driver who accused him of cutting him off in traffic. The situation worsened and Burton was fatally shot in front of his new wife. WXII reported.
Tyrek Burton is remembered as a devoted father of four daughters and a loving husband. His family is heartbroken and searching for answers. “He was nothing but good and I demand justice,” said Carolyn Burton, the groom’s mother, in an emotional plea to WFMY. “I demand it. I don’t want to wait years for it. “He doesn’t deserve what he got.”
On October 14, the Greensboro Police Department confirmed that they were conducting a homicide investigation. However, no details about possible suspects have been shared publicly. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
