‘Firstly I just want to say that not all cancers are caused by lifestyle choices, in some cases it is genetics or unfortunately it just happens.

‘In my case, despite being very healthy and active, cancer started in my bile ducts that was not caused by anything under my control and my life was never the same.

‘Cholangiocarinoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that often has no obvious causes or cure. I really hope that in the coming years more research is carried out on this horrible and cruel disease so that more lives can be saved.’

WHAT IS CHOLANGIOCARCINOMA (bile duct cancer)?

Bile duct cancer, also called cholangiocarcinoma, is a cancer found anywhere in the bile ducts, small tubes that connect different organs, including the liver and gallbladder.

Over time, the cells can grow into surrounding healthy tissues or organs and spread to other parts of the body.

Symptoms may be difficult to detect, but may include: the whites of the eyes turning yellow or the skin turning yellow; darker urine and paler poop; loss of appetite; unexpectedly lose weight; feeling bad, tired or having low energy.

Your risk of getting bile duct cancer increases as you age, and most people develop it after age 65.

Those with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a type of inflammation in the bile ducts, also have a higher risk of cholangiocarcinoma, as do those with long-term inflammation in the intestine (ulcerative colitis), a parasite in the liver (liver flukes), bile stones ductal and liver cirrhosis.

In England, around 2,800 people are diagnosed with bile duct cancer each year, according to Cancer Research UK, and this number is rising.
