Tragedy when father of five young children dies suddenly, leaving his wife to raise them alone

A stay-at-home dad with one-year-old quadruplets tragically passed away, leaving his wife alone to raise their five children.

Brett Wills died on Sunday, June 9, leaving his wife, Joanne Wills, and their five children: Peter, three, and quadruplets Jonathan, Oliver, Lucy and Esther, one.

The immediate family lived in Napier, on the North Island of New Zealand.

It is understood Mr Wills died due to ill health.

A online fundraising for the family said: ‘Brett was an excellent father and homemaker to his five children and an active member of his local church.’

The Givealittle page has raised more than $30,000 since it opened Monday.

His wife, a captain and secretary with the Hawke’s Bay Coast Guard, gave birth to the quadruplets at Wellington Hospital in August 2022.

The babies were born prematurely at 31 weeks and one day by scheduled cesarean section without complications.

It is understood Jonathan, Oliver, Lucy and Esther were the only second quadruplets born in New Zealand in the last 20 years.

In an emotional post on social media, Mrs Wills remembered her husband.

Wills (pictured with his wife, Joanne) was the stay-at-home dad to the quadruplets and the couple's three-year-old son.

“We are all heartbroken, he was the most loving and dedicated father and husband, and adored all of his children,” she wrote.

‘Unfortunately, his body became too weak and he couldn’t take it anymore and he went to be with the Lord in the afternoon.

“He was a very humble and pious man and will be greatly missed.”
