Tragedy: Boy dies after being hit by car outside his school in Tasmania, which was ‘full of dreams and ambitions’.

A 12-year-old boy who died after being hit by a car outside his school is being remembered by his community as “full of dreams and ambitions.”

Marshall Oakley Stagg died outside Cosgrove High School, in Glenorchy, north Hobart, after being hit by a driver about 3pm on Friday.

The 12-year-old, known as “Marshie” to friends and family, is remembered as a happy-go-lucky boy known to his schoolmates as “the fun kid.”

“Marshie was 12 years old and entering her first year of seventh grade full of dreams and ambitions,” local mom Kristy Canham wrote in a GoFundMe page.

‘Happy go lucky and, as his mother describes him, he said the most random things on a daily basis. That smile would light up any room she walked into.

Over the weekend, dozens of bouquets, toys and handwritten notes were left at the front doors of Cosgrove High School.

Tasmania Police have not confirmed whether the driver believed to have hit Marshall as he left school is a student, teacher or parent.

Inspector Jon Cooper said Marshall’s family were “devastated” and that students who had witnessed the “distressing” scene would be offered counselling.

He added that support had been provided to first responders at the scene.

“The driver is deeply shocked and concerned and has been taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital for mandatory testing,” Inspector Cooper said on Friday.

A spokesperson for Cosgrove High School said the school was in contact with the families involved and would continue to provide support during a “difficult time”.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff expressed his condolences to those affected.

“My heart goes out to the family of the young man who died and to all those who witnessed the tragedy,” he wrote in X.

“I can assure everyone that every resource will be made available to support the family and school community.”

Forensic and accident investigators were at the scene on Friday afternoon and police said their investigations were continuing.
