A driver has died in a freak crash on a major highway in Melbourne’s northwest.
At around 4pm, a white lorry was heading towards Altona on the M80 ring road when an object fell from the rear.
The object then crossed the highway and collided with a car heading toward Greensborough.
The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and has not yet been identified.
The truck driver did not stop after the incident and was last seen heading towards Altona.
It is unknown if the driver was aware that the incident had occurred.

Police are looking to speak to the driver and have urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
All Greensborough-bound lanes were closed between Ballarat Road and Sunshine Avenue following the collision.
