A British girl with cerebral palsy has tragically died during a family holiday in Crete.

The 13-year-old girl was on holiday with her parents in the village of Analipsi, Hersonissos, when she suddenly felt unwell yesterday, according to local media.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital in Heraklion where she was admitted to the children’s ICU and tragically died this morning.

The teenager’s mother told local media that she was born with cerebral palsy.

A Greek media outlet claims that a sudden deterioration in her symptoms likely led to the girl’s death.

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson told MailOnline: “We are providing support to the family of a British child who died in Greece and are in contact with local authorities.”

This comes just weeks after a British student tragically drowned in the picturesque waters of Lake Como in Italy on July 17 after failing to swim back to a boat he had rented with his girlfriend.

The 22-year-old Briton and his 19-year-old partner were enjoying a romantic holiday on Lake Como, staying at a hotel in Tremezzina, when they decided to rent a boat for a quiet tour of the lake.

As Italy was in the midst of a heatwave, the couple decided to go for a swim and took a dip in the water off the coast of Menaggio, about four miles north of their hotel in Tremezzina.

But the serene lake turned treacherous when strong winds picked up and their boat was swept away by the currents, leaving them both stranded.

Neither of them was able to reach their boat or the shore, and when fatigue began to set in, the young woman lost sight of her boyfriend in the choppy waters.

The struggling girl was saved when a passing boat happened to notice her struggling against the waves, picked her up and carried her back to shore.

Although she was tired and in shock, she was physically unharmed and urgently informed her rescuers about her partner’s disappearance, prompting a massive search operation.

Firefighters, rescue teams and helicopters from both the fire department and the Guardia di Finanza scoured the lake and the shores in the Menaggio area in the hope that the man had managed to save himself.

But the lifeless body of the 22-year-old was later located by a Guardia di Finanza plane near Griante and recovered that evening.

The local police in Menaggio have launched an investigation to clarify the details of this tragic accident.

An FCDO spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Italy and are in contact with local authorities.”
