A car crashed into the walls of Windsor Castle today as emergency services rushed to the scene and treated a person on the ground.

The front of a Volvo was crumpled up against the exterior of the royal residence in the rain on Thames Street after colliding head-on near the junction with River Street.

The vehicle’s airbags deployed during the incident, which is believed to have happened around 8.10 today and also involved two other cars.

Thames Valley Police officers closed the road in the center of the Berkshire town with paramedics also attending and two local buses were forced to divert.

It comes after a man was arrested by armed officers after crashing his vehicle into the gates of Buckingham Palace in the early hours of Saturday morning.

In Windsor this morning, a passer-by said: ‘People already saying someone drove out and smashed straight into the Windsor Castle wall.

‘There was definitely one person in the car and I couldn’t see if there was anyone else – all of a sudden there were people around (the vehicle) very quickly.

‘There was someone on the floor being treated but it was a very calm atmosphere. People didn’t really know what was going on and some were afraid it was something serious.’

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: ‘Thames Street, Windsor is currently closed in both directions due to a traffic collision. It will likely remain closed for some time. Please find alternative routes if you can.’

And a spokesman for Thames Valley Buses said: ‘Due to the closure of Thames Street, services 2 and 703 will be unable to serve Windsor Parish Church towards Bracknell/Dedworth.

‘Please use Charles Street for service 2 and York House for 703. We apologize for any disruption.’

The crash comes three days after a motorist was arrested after crashing into the gates of Buckingham Palace.

Armed police swooped when the unnamed man in his 20s drove into the wrought iron gate at 2.35am on Saturday.
