A tourist was found dead in a hotel by a cleaner in a holiday destination known for attracting large numbers of British holidaymakers.

He has been described in conflicting local reports as an Irish or British holidaymaker.

Police said last night they were unable to confirm his nationality because a judge had imposed a secrecy order on the case to protect the ongoing investigation, preventing public officials from entering the details of the investigation.

The building where he was found dead on Monday around 12:30 p.m. is called the Colina Mar complex, located in the seaside resort of Puerto Rico, in the municipality of Mogan, in the south of the island.

He apparently suffered a head injury following a blow or a fall.

A Civil Guard source said last night: “There were signs of violence but the results of the autopsy are still awaited.”

A housekeeper raised the alarm after finding the man’s lifeless body while trying to enter the apartment on Monday.

A friend he allegedly traveled to the island with was also in the room when police arrived.

He was said to have been “completely disoriented” following unconfirmed allegations that he may have been under the influence of drugs.

The dead man was described as a 33-year-old Irishman by one respected local newspaper and as British by another.

He was pronounced dead on site despite emergency efforts to resuscitate him.

The island’s Civil Guard said last night that secrecy imposed on the case by a judge prevented it from making official comments, including giving information about the man’s nationality.

The possibility that he died in an accident has not been ruled out, although initial reports indicate his death may be crime-related.
