I understand the rivalry, I was part of one of the biggest in the world in recent years with Celtic and Rangers. But I will never understand if someone wants their own team to lose.

Sport is not about that. That’s not what I love about the game. What I like most is competitiveness, challenging yourself to beat someone and come out successful. Anything outside of that has nothing to do with sport.

If other people want to treat it that way, enjoying other people’s misery, that’s not how I’ve lived my life and that’s not how I perceive my role. My role is to make this football club successful and I know that 100 per cent of Spurs fans want us to win, to be successful and to win trophies. Winning will help us bring joy to 100 percent of Spurs fans.

Did Tottenham fans ever think they would be in this position?

It seems like most of their fans are desperate to lose tonight. If they win, they will allow Arsenal to take pole position in the title race heading into the final day.

You don’t need a genius to tell you that Spurs hate the Gunners, so this is a very complicated situation for them.

One Spurs fan told me they don’t “expect” to lose, but would be “happy to lose.” I think that statement shows the conflict perfectly.

Most Tottenham fans would echo that statement, but not all do.

Another fan told me that they want Spurs to win, even though they don’t want Arsenal to win the league because they support their team and “City need to do it alone.”

So, we know that the title race will go down to the final day.

However, that doesn’t mean today isn’t a deciding factor in the fate of the Premier League trophy.

After Arsenal’s victory at Old Trafford on Sunday, the Gunners lead the standings by one point.

A Tottenham win, or even a draw, means Arsenal will be on top heading into the final day. Meanwhile, a win for City means they will be two points clear and on course for a record fourth consecutive Premier League title.

This is simply a situation that all Spurs fans wanted to avoid.

If Tottenham beat Manchester City tonight, their north London rivals Arsenal will go into the final day one point clear of the Citizens at the top of the Premier League.

There is no doubt that the Gunners fans will support Tottenham for one night only, their fate is in their hands.

Or not? We have to remember that City look unstoppable now, while Tottenham are far from their best form.

Even if Spurs fight tonight, it does not guarantee that they can topple Pep Guardiola’s team of giants.

But if they do, they will have done their greatest enemies a great favor.

It’s arguably the biggest night of the season.
