Yves Bissouma was reportedly robbed outside a five-star hotel in Cannes this weekend, with the robbers “spraying his face with tear gas” before fleeing with his “£260,000 watch”.

The Tottenham defender, who joined the club in 2022 after completing a £25m transfer from Brighton, was according to Sunarriving at the five-star Majestic Barriere hotel on the French Riviera.

The outlet claims that Bissouma, 27, was “attacked by two hooded men as he got out of his car” on the Promenade de la Croisette, a street parallel to the hotel and the seafront.

The incident occurred at approximately 4am on Sunday morning, when the midfielder allegedly attempted to seek safety away from the assailants inside the French hotel, but the doors were locked.

The thieves took the luxury watch from his wrist before leaving the scene in a car. The Sun adds that Bissouma and his wife were “shocked and dismayed” and “returned to England later on Sunday despite having been due to spend several days on holiday in Cannes”.

French police subsequently opened an investigation into the incident.

It appears that Bissouma had also returned to Tottenham’s training ground in Enfield today for some treatment after he posted a photo on his Instagram story of himself in the medical rooms at the club’s training base.

It came after the midfielder suffered a knee injury during their 2-1 win against Burnley on May 11, with the Spurs star missing their last two league games against Man City and Sheffield United.

He sat out Tottenham’s post-season friendly against Newcastle in Australia due to the problem.

Bissouma has made 28 Premier League appearances for Tottenham this season and has made a strong start to the campaign, helping Ange Postecoglou’s side go unbeaten in their opening eight league games.

The defensive midfielder seemed to quickly come to life under the Australian coach, with Postecoglou trusting him to play with freedom and a role that would allow him to pick up the ball in midfield, turn and attack teams.

His good form at the start of the season may have been affected by a difficult few months on international duty with Mali in the African Cup of Nations.

While Mali would reach the quarter-finals of the competition before suffering a defeat to eventual champions Ivory Coast, their head coach revealed that Bissouma had played with malaria.

Bissouma contracted the disease during the tournament which was also held in Ivory Coast, but appeared in all but one match of the tournament.

‘You know that Yves and Moussa suffered from malaria, as far as blood tests go. It’s not that serious, because someone born in West Africa is used to malaria, he could play, but for Moussa it was different,” revealed Mali coach Eric Chelle.

‘It was the first time he had contracted malaria, so he started light training. We’ll take things carefully, but there’s no outbreak or anything like that.
