Mauricio Pochettino has insisted he has the full support of Chelsea’s owners despite their Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool.

The Blues faced Jurgen Klopp’s side at Wembley on Sunday and wasted several chances, before their performance fell in extra time and Virgil van Dijk scored the winner in the 118th minute.

The defeat seemed like a huge missed opportunity for Pochettino’s team, particularly given the high number of injuries and absences that Liverpool faced, but the Argentine asked for patience in his project at Stamford Bridge and stated that he retained the backing of the Chelsea board.

In his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup fifth round match against Leeds on Wednesday, Pochettino said: “The owners showed me their support after the final. Todd Boehly also sent me a nice message.

‘After the final, during the night, I met Behdad (co-owner of Eghbali) and we were talking. “We shared our opinions on the game and the opportunity we missed.”

Pochettino added: “Of course we are disappointed. Chelsea are about winning.

‘Liverpool stayed for four years, Klopp didn’t win any titles but he had the support of the club to move forward. Look, now they’re getting what they deserve.

“Reaching the final was a great achievement in this project.”

Supporters on social media suggested the former Spurs boss appeared to have ignored the American during the presentation.

Meanwhile, Pochettino also responded to claims that Chelsea played penalties at Wembley.

After finishing regulation time strongly, the Blues appeared to sit back against their exhausted opponents for the extra 30 minutes that allowed the Reds to regain control of the match.

After the match, explaining Chelsea’s drop in performance, Pochettino had said: “We had no energy in extra time. We started to suffer a little and that’s normal.

“We can’t freshen up the midfield and of course it’s true that maybe we were waiting for the penalties because after all the effort it was huge.”

Speaking on Tuesday, Pochettino hinted that these words had been misinterpreted when he said: “We never prepared the team to take penalties. Come on.

‘We are going to win in 90 minutes or in extra time. Before overtime and the overtime break, we said “come on, we have to go.” That’s why we put offensive players to win the game.

‘We were not clinical enough. You always need some luck to score and win the game. If we won in 90 minutes, maybe people would talk differently…’
