Tottenham Hotspur is facing competition in their bid to sign Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard from Roma this summer, reports in Italy have claimed.
The imposing Dane is high on Tottenham’s list of defensive goals as the North London club appears to be strengthening at the rear after another frustrating campaign.
Vestergaard, who came to Southampton from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2018 for around £ 18 million, has been a key player for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this season.
Roma are said to be competing with Tottenham for Jannik Vestergaard’s arrival this summer
The Saints finished seventh in the Premier League before sustaining a knee injury in December, but slipped off the table in his absence. He also missed the 9-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Vestergaard has played 26 games in all competitions this season and has formed a solid partnership with Jan Bednarek at the heart of Southampton’s defense.
He played 90 minutes in the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Spurs on Wednesday night, as well as the FA Cup semi-final loss against Leicester at Wembley last week.
But, according to the Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Roma is also considering a move for the 28-year-old.
It is claimed that the Italians want an ‘experienced and quality’ player for their defense next season and Roma director Tiago Pinto is planning talks with Vestergaard’s entourage next week.
The Danish defender made an impression for Southampton this season and has a lot of experience
They even claim that Vestergaard is also eligible for a transfer by Juventus, who want to overhaul their selection after a disappointing season.
Spurs would also be excited about Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar, but failed to get the defender into the January window.
It remains to be seen how Jose Mourinho’s resignation will affect the club’s transfer plans as Ryan Mason has been given the job until the end of the season.
Spurs are currently in the process of hiring a new manager, but they are not expected to make an appointment until the end of the season.
Maurizio Sarri, Julian Nagelsmann and Marcelino are considered the main contenders, while Hasenhuttl has been linked after his impressive work with the Saints.
