The Tottenham boss enjoys a joke with his players during a training on Tuesday
‘First of all, a press conference, three or four interviews, a flash interview, a few minutes after the game … I sometimes think we coaches are great guys not to say too much … better not use the words … you understand me.
‘I think we should be smart guys and keep our emotions in check and not say the wrong things because it’s never easy, especially after defeat.
Sometimes there are moments of frustration and post-game interviews are the perfect place to not say the right things or to leave things out.
Today, in a pre-match press conference, you can follow everything you say word for word because we are calm without pressure and without adrenaline. But after competitions it is not easy for us. ‘
Mourinho expressed his frustration after their fifth defeat in six league games against West Ham
And seemingly referring to Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel’s scathing criticism of Callum Hudson-Odoi after recruiting the English winger after only deploying him halfway through, Mourinho added: [managers] say things that can be controversial, we say things that people don’t understand, we can even say really bad things, which was not my case, but this weekend, for example, I think one of my colleagues went a little too far in his words, but that is a different story, because it’s not Jose Mourinho, that’s no problem.
In relation to my words, it is a great frustration to lose matches, especially matches like that [at West Ham]
‘I’d rather lose well than bad, but when you lose and play badly, the feeling is just disappointment and sometimes anger.
‘But when you play so well and lose, you realize that there are things that you cannot control. You hit the post twice. That ball, the new ball, I hate that new ball, now white and dark blue, the ball wouldn’t go in [the net]I have no control. Probably the yellow ball will go in.
Title challenger December’s Tottenham form has collapsed and they are sitting in the middle of the table
‘We had two posts, we had a lot of cross over the goal, you have no control. The VAR was of course right with the rejected goal. The VAR was correct. But you are waiting for a bit of luck and the VAR is correct. And the linesman was right. No, it wasn’t [the break we needed]’You make a mistake, at the beginning of the second half, boom, a goal. So there are things that you can work on a lot, you can fight and you can analyze, but there are things that you have no control over. ‘
Mourinho says there is only one way for Spurs to turn things around in those cases where things go against them.
He added: ‘What can you do when you have things out of your control? Work!
Therefore after the [West Ham] game we didn’t go home. We arrived at the training ground and went to analyze the West Ham game so that the next session we were ready to analyze it with the players.
‘The next day we analyzed the first match against Wolfsberger and you work again and divide the groups. Some guys can train, others have to recover and you take care of everything.
‘You talk to everyone and try to find out with sports science and doctors who is best in shape. We work a lot in this building. And sometimes we feel the frustration. ‘
