Of all the risks taken in the FA Cup to keep players fresh, it always felt like an extreme selection to throw in Michel Vorm.
The 36-year-old Dutch goalkeeper no longer played in a competition program since October 2018.
He had not started a match yet, but Vorm was recalled against Norwich when Jose Mourinho gave Paulo Gazzaniga a breather in a competition he had firmly focused on winning.

Gazzaniga was not flawless in the time of Mourinho at Spurs, but Hugo Lloris was still injured and when Vorm’s mistake resulted in a late equalizer for Norwich, it didn’t seem like a smart move.
Vorm was only able to repel a fierce attack from distance by Kenny McLean straight to the feet of Josip Drmic, who reacted quickly and bundled the rebound into the net after 78 minutes.
It was well deserved by Norwich and the sign of a breathless final phase of the normal time in which Ben Godfrey produced a stunning block on his own goal line to deny Serge Aurier and then an insane period of extra time.
Penalties gave Vorm the chance for Vorm to cash in on himself, but it was the Dutch keeper in the Norwich team who emerged as the hero.
Tim Krul has a well-deserved reputation as an expert when it comes to saving sanctions and it was improved on White Hart Lane.
Krul saved from teenager Troy Parrott and new signature Gedson Fernandes, and Erik Lamela hit the bar.

They had been left early, after a Jan Vertonghen header, which seemed to be a personal redemption for a player who was taken away with less than an hour to go in the fourth round against Southampton.
Tottenham opened fiercely with Giovani Lo Celso further deployed in support of Dele Alli and hugely influential in the early stages of the draw.
He started with a miscued effort that resulted in a lot of ridicule from more than nine thousand supporters in the end, but the next attempt by Lo Celso forced the first rescue of Tim Krul’s night.
Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura split the defense of Norwich before Moura rolled a perfect pass to Lo Celso and curled his right leg to keep his low shot out. Spurs was the most dangerous when they broke out at speed.
Lo Celso provided the free kick for the goal of Vertonghen, an out-swinger from the left flank that tempted Krul to shuffle out of his line as if the idea of coming out to claim the cross went through his head.

The goalkeeper withdrew into his goal line and Vertonghen slipped away from Mario Vrancic and climbed over Jamal Lewis to find the net with a powerful header.
Norwich found his pass and started to cause Tottenham problems. Emi Buendia jumped into the penalty area and forced Form into action.
It was the first appearance of the Spurs goalkeeper since he got off the bench after Lloris got a red card in a Champions League tie at PSV Eindhoven and he first started for 533 days when he played in a 2-1- defeat at Inter Milan.
Since then, he has been released and resigned and escaped with a heart-in-mouth error when he found a fierce drive of distance through Lukas Rupp in the first half. There were similarities to Adrian’s Liverpool’s costly foul, which led to a goal in Chelsea on Tuesday, expecting Fortune Beneficiary Form.
The ball slipped out of its grip but turned away from the goal instead of toward it and gave him the chance to recover.
Norwich insisted on an equalizer. Eric Dier blocked another attempt, this time from Vrancic before Spurs had the opportunity to increase their lead in the final seconds of the first half.
Lucas Moura tries to double Spurs’ lead in the first half, but is refused by a great stop by Tim Krul
Tom Trybull ran into Vrancic’s problems in his own penalty area and Moura stepped in to win the ball. The Brazilian, who played with a bloody nose after a chance collision with Todd Cantwell, was refused by Krul, who rushed out of his line to close him.
The visitors deliberately continued after the interval. Vrancic made another save to Vorm and then closed with a curling free kick.
Mourinho sent Gedson Fernandes in an attempt to strengthen his midfield and protect the lead. Gedson, signed from Benfica in January, quickly forced a rescue from Krul, but could not relieve the fear at the other end.
Norwich continued to form Vorm’s goal until Drmic found the tying goal and Krul took a step forward as he always does in the penalty shootout.
