Millions of Australians are set to be hit by wet weather as a band of rain sweeps across the east of the country.

Sky News weather presenter Lucy Polkinghorne said 80 per cent of the country is likely to be hit by wet conditions this week.

“This band of rain will continue to move eastwards during the week, increasing cloud cover over the eastern half of the country on Tuesday and then bringing much cooler and wetter conditions,” Polkinghorne said.

“In fact, 80 percent of the country is likely to experience some wet weather as a result of this phenomenon.”

Rain is forecast for Sydney on Wednesday and Thursday, with lighter rainfall expected on Friday, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

A high of 30°C is expected at the start of the rain event on Wednesday before temperatures drop to 18°C ​​and 19°C by the end of the week.

Melbourne is bracing for rain from Tuesday into Thursday before it clears on Friday.

Adelaide residents can expect rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, before sunshine returns on Thursday and Friday.
