A top chef who worked under Heston Blumenthal has shared his simple trick for removing a broken eggshell from raw eggs.
British-born chef Robbie Bell, head charcutier at City Larder in Melbourne, said the easiest and quickest way was to use half the shell to scoop the tiny shards out of the egg whites.
“This is a great little tip. The best way to remove the shell from your egg is to use half the shell you just broke,” he said in his TikTok video.
“It works every time.”
His video has since been viewed more than 30,000 times, with many admitting that they always use their fingers to remove the pesky bit of shell.
“You’re 20 years late. Why didn’t someone tell me this before?’ one wrote, the other said, ‘Why did I never know this?’
And one man added, “Holy s***, why didn’t I learn this in chef school?”
However, some suggested the trick was “common knowledge” — and were curious how others commonly remove broken shells from their eggs.
Top chef Robbie Bell said the easiest and fastest way to remove small pieces of shell from the egg whites was to use half the shell to scoop it out
And Robbie isn’t the only chef to share the tip. British chef Jamie Oliver previously revealed how he removed the broken shell fragments from the eggs.
“We’ve all done it. We make an omelet or a cake and we break our eggs and then a little random shell accidentally falls into the egg,” Jamie said.
“Now the natural instinct is to get into it with your fingers, but if you try to grab it, it always runs off and it’s kind of annoying.
“The easiest way to do it, believe it or not, is to go back to our friend Mr Shell. You can easily mop it up and get those pesky bits of shell every time. Happy Days.
“So, boys, that’s how you remove the shell from eggs.”
