Tools down! The construction site of The Block resembles a ghost town

The Block Australia has become the latest television project to be hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Channel Nine announced on Thursday that the upcoming season’s filming in Melbourne has been suspended due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak.

In a statement to Daily Mail Australia, a spokesperson confirmed that all teams were being sent home due to rising travel bans, border closings, and security concerns.

The statement said, “Current production of The Block brought five teams from all over Australia to Melbourne to participate in the 16th season.”

“Due to the increasing travel ban, border closures, and additional measures, The Block has decided to suspend filming and send participants home while still possible.”

The spokesperson added that professional craftsmen were still working at the Brighton, Melbourne site.

On Thursday, all production crew and participants were nowhere to be seen because a small number of construction workers were doing their job.

What was clear was the number of signs on the site urging workers to practice good hygiene.

One poster even urged the crew and construction workers to use the supplied hand cleaner at each entry point to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Current production of The Block brought five teams from all over Australia to Melbourne to participate in the 16th season,” a Nine spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia on Thursday.

Apart from participants, The Block employs many traders and freelancers, who depend on income from the TV program for their livelihood.

Photographs obtained by Daily Mail Australia earlier this year showed five homes from the 1930s to 1960s at the construction site.

Last year, it was reported that some older residents near the venue ‘sold their homes’ for fear the show would ‘ruin’ their quiet street.

The Andrina nursing home was located at the address until 2014, before it was demolished with developers looking to build 13 luxury mansions.

After these plans ultimately failed and the site was left empty for years, Nine’s MicJoy Pty Ltd bought the place in April 2019 for $ 14.96 million.

According to Domain, the company’s application stated ‘moving five houses to the site’ – similar to the 2017 season of the Elsternwick show.
