An Australian surfing legend has been stretchered off a beach after an apparent neck injury.

Tom Carroll was photographed clutching the back of his head while surrounded by lifeguards at Narrabeen Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches about 9am on Wednesday.

The 63-year-old managed to get back onto the sand with his surfboard before his neck was examined.

Paramedics treated him for head injuries before placing him on a stretcher, carrying him off the beach and taking him to Northern Beaches Hospital.

Carroll had celebrated his birthday the day before before suffering the injury.
