Tokyo Olympics: three for Team GB! Tom Pidcock wins GOLD in men’s mountain bike cross country

Three for Team GB! Tom Pidcock wins GOLD in men’s mountain bike cross-country event to continue a great day for Brits after success for Adam Peaty and diving duo Tom Daley and Matty Lee

Tom Pidcock took Team GB’s third gold medal within hours of winning the men’s mountain bike cross-country event.

The 21-year-old was one of the favorites for the race and his chances increased even further when good-humored Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel crashed early.

Midway through the race, Pidcock and Swiss duo Mathias Fluckiger and Nino Schurter began to separate from the rest of the field.

But Schurter gradually fell away, and the last few laps saw Pidcock pull back from the backlog and extend his lead up front with a sensational ride.

Only a crash or mechanical failure could deny him gold late in the day, and he avoided both to cross the line and secure another gold for Great Britain one great morning.
