Tokyo-ow! Peruvian skateboarder Angelo Caro Narvaez gets a dazzling crash when he slides off his board and crashes into a rail… hitting a VERY sensitive spot
Peruvian Angelo Caro Narvaez suffered a very painful-looking crash during the first skateboarding event in Olympic history.
Skateboarding is one of five new events taking place during the Games, and the men’s street event was the first medal to be won.
Narvaez was a medal contender going into the day, but he couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start in the qualifying round.
Peruvian Angelo Caro Narvaez had a dazzling crash after trying to grind a rail
The 21-year-old looked unstable on the rail and off balance as he tried to land on his board
Narvaez almost managed to get off the landing, but couldn’t hold himself up
He fell off his board and crashed into the railing first in a very painful looking crash
The Peruvian tried to sharpen a rail, but was unable to complete the landing and fell off his board and crashed his crotch into the opposite railing first.
Understandably, the 21-year-old looked sore and took a moment to calm herself after the dazzling crash.
He eventually got up and slammed his legs in frustration, but luckily he wasn’t too badly injured.
Narvaez managed to calm himself and came seventh from the heats to reach the final
The judges gave him a low score of 1.01 for the run, but with the way the skateboarding event works, Narvaez had a chance to make amends.
He scored a 6.96 on his second run and then performed strongly in the stage where the skateboarders are allowed to do five individual tricks, meaning he finished seventh in the heats and qualified for the final.
Narvaez recovered even stronger in the final and briefly ran into the medal positions.
However, he slipped out of the bronze medal position and finished fifth with a total score of 32.87.
Japan’s Yuto Horigome won the sport’s first-ever Olympic gold with an incredible performance in the trick category, while Brazil’s Kelvin Hoefler took silver and Team USA’s Jagger Eaton took bronze.
