Brooke Boney was reduced to tears on Friday as she received an emotional farewell on the Today show, ahead of her move to England to study.
The 37-year-old news and entertainment reporter, who began working with the Channel Nine breakfast show in January 2019, received flowers from her colleagues as she gave a heartfelt statement live on air.
“I want to thank the public for accepting me. I’m grateful to all of you for tuning in every day,” Brooke began.
“It’s a privilege to go to Oxford, but it’s even more of a privilege to be surrounded by so many people who love me so much. I find it hard to leave.”
The veteran presenter added that her appointment to the show was a huge milestone for Indigenous Australians and thanked the team for giving her a chance.
“Today was the first morning show in the country to be hosted by an Aboriginal person full-time. It’s now a very normal thing in this time slot and I’m proud of that.”
Presenter Karl Stefanovic, 50, paid tribute to Brooke with emotional words: “We love you and we cherish you for everything you stand for, and for how hard you work. You have such an immediate connection with everyone.”
Meanwhile, co-host Sarah Abo, 38, said they were very proud of Brooke and wished her the best of luck for the future.

In March, Boney shocked viewers when he announced his resignation on live television.
The journalist confirmed that she will step down from her role after the Olympic Games in July and August to pursue an exciting new career opportunity.
Boney broke down in tears when she announced in March that she was leaving Today and moving abroad to study for a Masters in Public Policy at the prestigious University of Oxford.
On Tuesday, Channel Nine confirmed that Jayne Azzopardi, who co-presents Weekend Today with Clint Stanaway, will replace Boney.

Steven Burling, Nine’s director of morning television, said the broadcaster was “delighted” to welcome Azzopardi to the Today news desk.
Azzopardi, 44, joined Nine in 2009 as a political journalist in Canberra before joining the Sydney newsroom in 2011.
She was also previously a news presenter for Weekend Today and was appointed as presenter in April 2023.
Meanwhile, Brooke’s Today show colleagues, including co-hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo, paid heartfelt tribute to her.
