To play or not to play? Football fans have their say about the Premier League Project Restart plans

The Premier League has stepped up plans to restart the season next month.

With players returning for small-group training, the resumption of the 2019-20 campaign is scheduled for June 12 or June 19 next week.

Sports email spoke to fans of the Premier League clubs about whether the players should be playing and how the season should be handled if it can’t be completed …

Liverpool

Should players just keep going?

If NHS staff, supermarket employees and delivery staff are expected to work, why not soccer players? They have the best medical care, access to tests and are among the fittest people in the country.

How should title / euro positions be determined if no play is possible?

The title is easy. Liverpool’s closest ‘challengers’ are Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola admitted the title months ago.

Happy with how your club handles pay cuts / deferrals?

No. Liverpool have misjudged the mood by leave staff. But at least they corrected it.

Manchester United

Will Heath

Should the season be void?

If it can’t be completed by the end of July, yes. No title and Euro positions the same as last year. You must play all teams twice, both at home and away, to win the competition.

Happy with how your club handles pay cuts / deferrals?

Although it is much easier for United to deal with it. The leave staff are pretty bad.

Leicester city

Warwick Kay, LCFC World

Should players just keep going?

They have every right to worry. Every precaution must be taken to ensure that it is safe.

Neutral locations?

No. Matches must be played in the relevant stadiums.

Happy with how your club handles pay cuts / deferrals?

It was okay, but I would have liked the players to have done more themselves. I disagree with clubs that fire staff.

Should players just keep going?

Footballers are people with family and friends. They should not be expected to endanger the health and safety of those closest to us for the sake of our entertainment.

How should title / euro positions be determined if no play is possible?

Points per game so far.

Burnley

Tony Scholes, Up The Clarets

Neutral locations?

If it is the only way. No matter how the season is completed, it will be on empty ground, so move on to neutral ground if possible.

Happy with how your club handles pay cuts / deferrals?

Burnley has done everything that could have been asked of them. No one has had a pay cut or deferred payment. It was embarrassing to see some clubs rushing to do it, be it the bigger ones (Liverpool and Spurs) or those with Bournemouth rich in Russian money.

Brighton

Simon Cox

Should players just keep going?

They are right to worry. But worrying didn’t win wars, and everyone involved would be much happier if they closed the current season and prepared for a new one.

Neutral locations?

No! There are no neutral locations. There is someone else’s home or parish. Some you may like, more you will hate. Even in which dressing room you are can disturb the rhythm.

Should the season be void?

Yes. Liverpool fans and others may disagree, but life before Covid and apres-Covid are two very different things. I need to wipe the slate and start over.

Arsenal

Peter Wood, Le Grove

Neutral locations?

These neutral soils will be Covid-19 transmission hotspots within two weeks. The League does not look that good.

Happy with how your club handles pay cuts / deferrals?

We are the standout club when it comes to caring for the workers. Liverpool and Spurs have learned the hard way that the British public will not tolerate spongers during a pandemic.

Newcastle

Tom Bore

Should players just keep going?

If no Newcastle players wanted to return I wouldn’t have any complaints.

How should title / euro positions be determined if no play is possible?

Points per game. The best of a bad group.

Happy with how your club handles pay cuts / deferrals?

One word: not surprising. Mike Ashley has been doing these tricks for years. Hopefully, once the acquisition is complete, all employees will be removed from the leave program.

Chelsea

Andy Seaby, Chels Daft

Should players just keep going?

I would be concerned. Cancel the season and start again in August. It takes away all worries.

Neutral locations?

No. Is there really enough time to fix this? Players need another preseason to play a ludicrous schedule on neutral ground?

Manchester City

Howard Hockin, podcast 93:20

Should players just keep going?

They have every right to be concerned about returning to action. Their health is just as important as everyone else’s.

Should the season be void?

If a decision has to be made quickly, that’s the least unfair of the options.

Happy with how your club handles pay cuts / deferrals?

Yes. They are well placed to cope, but City has provided meals to homeless people and used the land as a virus testing center.

Everton

Joel Parker, Toffee Analysis

Should players just keep going?

Football is a contact sport. They should not be forced onto the field just because we are bored in a closed space.

Should the season be void?

Surely. It doesn’t matter where the games are scheduled, it is not safe. So no relegation, no promotion.

Crystal Palace

Jay Crame, The Eagles Beak

Neutral locations?

Football returns and is played as intended, or not at all.

Should the season be void?

I cannot see how this season is being completed in the current environment. But taking the table as it is and averaging points per game both pose problems, so puny looks the fairest.

Aston Villa

Damian Dugdale, www.avfc.blog @avfcblog

Should the season be void?

Yes. What about doctors and nurses? Why should they treat a footballer so that someone can earn a few more pounds? Name it all. No title. Nobody goes down.

West Ham

Jacob Waller, Forever_Boleyn

Should the season be void?

Yes. If not, legal action would be taken by clubs going under or missing European football.

Happy with the way your club has handled cut wages / deferred payments?

Yes. However, there are rumors that the owners could sell key players to make up for the financial losses.

Sheffield United

Steve Young

Should players just keep going?

If it’s safe. If that’s the case, I hope they find a way to complete the season, even behind closed doors. It would be a real shame not to see this season end.

How should title / euro positions be determined if no play is possible?

A sort of points-per-game format. Not perfect, but that would be the fairest way. Easy for us to say, but there has to be promotion and demotion.
