That’s why Mathys Tel is underestimated
It was the big topic at FC Bayern Munich last summer: How will the record champions replace their top scorer Robert Lewandowski? To date, the answer has been: Not at all. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting stepped in first. For the future, however, FCB has strengthened itself with an absolute top talent. Hasan Salihamidzic put a rumored 20 million euros on the table for Mathys Tel to free him from Stade Rennes.
But until then, Tel was only used sporadically. In a total of 21 games across all competitions, he only played 489 minutes. In the Bundesliga it was 305 in 16 appearances – just over three full games. But during this time he still showed how good he can be. In his only starting XI appearance in the Bundesliga, on matchday 6 against VfB Stuttgart, he promptly scored – but three games on the bench followed. Tel wasn’t even substituted on.
He scored a goal in three other appearances. This means he has four goals in 305 Bundesliga minutes. He hit once every 77 hand revolutions. If he were a jack of all trades with this quota, he would have scored the equivalent of 40 goals this season! Of course, that’s not a realistic assessment, because he often benefits from the opponent’s tired legs at the end of the season and also twice from games that have already been decided (goals for 5-1 against Mainz and 6-1 against Werder). Nonetheless, Tel has shown some signs of being able to play a more important role under the new manager.
That’s what makes Munich so strong
Mathys Tel hasn’t played at all under Thomas Tuchel, but that’s mainly due to a hamstring injury he sustained during the international break when Tuchel took the helm at Bayern Munich. However, he returned to the bench against Manchester City and on Matchday 28 he has two potentially decisive personnel situations up his sleeve: Sadio Mané was suspended for a game after his altercation with Leroy Sané. And Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting struggled with knee problems for a long time, he only got back into team training on Thursday – the game is on Saturday.
It is therefore quite possible that Mathys Tel will be able to go on the hunt for goals again at the weekend – Serge Gnabry as a striker has hardly worked at all recently. But Tel can do much more than just scoring goals. The 17-year-old is extremely well trained athletically. He is fast, agile and has a great start. He has a good physique and can also assert himself over his body.
He also has a very fine technique, especially in dribbling. He has a lot of moves to dance his opponents out of the tightest of spaces – you don’t want him near the goal with the ball at his feet. He knows exactly where the goal is and always finds the free space – whether for himself or his teammates – to get to the end.
Mathys Tel has this potential at FC Bayern Munich
“The Sky is the limit” for Mathys Tel. There is a good reason why FC Bayern Munich spent 20 million euros on a 17-year-old. The Frenchman has all the basic requirements to become one of the greats. The future belongs to him with the record champions – provided he develops as hoped.
Because in the short term it’s difficult for him. But FCB’s ongoing problems without a real nine and Choupo-Moting’s recurring health problems open up opportunities for Tel that he must use. Thomas Tuchel is known for integrating young players well into his game – and it’s only a matter of time before this super youngster gets his regular playing time at Bayern.
But even if nothing should change, Tel is a very exciting player for your Comunio team. You can always hope that he scores again. If you are a Pro Player, you get another bonus: Bayern only plays once on Sundays – so you can just put Tel on the bench and send a striker on the field who is in action on Sundays. If you are satisfied with Tel’s points, you remove the striker from the game – and Tel slips into the starting eleven for him, so that you can take his points with you.
