The red thong worn in the 1997 film The Full Monty went up for auction along with other famous accessories on Tuesday, but it was the only one that didn't sell.

When Robert Carlyle and company stripped down to nothing but red thongs in the British cult classic The Full Monty, they left crowds of women screaming with joy.

The image of the merry band of unemployed steelworkers, entertained by the sound of Tom Jones’ version of You Can Leave Your Hat On, has brought smiles to millions of film fans since its release in 1997.

But nearly three decades after it became an unexpected movie hit, the appetite for satin underwear seems to have really waned.

The red thong worn by Mark Addy, who played Dave Horsfall in the low-budget sensation, failed to sell at an auction of film costumes and props earlier this week.

To add to the misery, the item was even put up for sale online with a price tag of £495, but has yet to be claimed.

The auction raised £12.4 million, according to The Telegraphand is one of the most successful Hollywood prop auctions.

The wooden door from the Titanic that saved Rose, but not Jack, from a frozen death was one of the items sold.

The eight-foot-long, 41-inch-wide Titanic propeller sold for £569,739 and the listing even noted that it “caused much debate among fans.”

Fans of the 1997 film have long argued over whether both Rose, played by Kate Winslet, and Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, could have fit in the door.

The debate was so long and fierce that, 25 years later, director James Cameron revealed that he did an “exhaustive” analysis to prove that Jack couldn’t have fit in.

Other well-known props sold included the whip from the 1984 film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Sold for £415,000, the whip is the franchise’s highest-priced costume/props to date.

Tobey Maguire’s Spiderman suit was also auctioned off and presented on a mannequin.
