Emoji are particularly popular on dating apps, with up to 81 percent of Tinder members opting to use the characters while messaging potential dates.
Now, Tinder has revealed the top emoji used by its members in their dating app biographies.
The ‘face with tears of joy’ tops the list, and daters include it in their bio to indicate they’re looking for someone who can make them laugh.
However, some of the other main emoji have slightly more cryptic meanings – this is what they really indicate daters are looking for.

“With authenticity front and center in dating in 2023, singles maintain a take-it-or-leave-it attitude, which means staying true to yourself comes first in any situation,” Tinder explained.
“If it doesn’t work out, daters will just shrug it off and move on.”
An old-fashioned ‘winky face’ is listed as the third most popular emoji in the Tinder bio, while the ‘ghost’ emoji is the fourth most popular.

Finally, the ‘eyes’ emoji rounds out the top five, and seems popular with singles who are feeling more flirtatious.
The Tinder news comes shortly after the experts at musicMagpie revealed Britain’s top 10 emoji ‘icks’.

Some of the top emoji used by Tinder users in their bios have slightly more cryptic meanings.
For the survey, musicMagpie asked 2,000 British adults their opinion on various popular emoji.
The results revealed that The main ick emoji was the ‘two hearts’ icon, and 45 percent of those surveyed found this emoji cringe-worthy.
This wasn’t the only heart emoji to be deemed an ick, with ‘heart suit’, ‘red heart’ and ‘smiley face with hearts’ also all making the top ten.
Other faces that made it to the top list were the ‘kissing face’, ‘winking face’ and ‘smiley face with mouth open and eyes wide shut’.
Rounding out the top ten, meanwhile, were ‘person with crossed hands’, ‘fire’ and ‘eyes rolled’.
