Lonhro, one of Australia’s most popular horses, has died aged 25.

The horse, who won 26 of his 35 starts, including 11 in Group 1, died at his home in Kelvinside, New South Wales, Godolphin said.

“Lonhro had a large, well-earned following, and earned the admiration and respect of everyone within our Godolphin teams during his years as Darley Stallion and in his retirement,” Godolphin Australia corporate director Ross Cole said.

“We were honored to have him as part of our operation.”

Lonhro’s wins include two Caulfield Stakes and two George Ryder Stakes, as well as the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Caulfied Guineas and an Australian Cup, to name just a few.

Darren Beadman rode the stallion to victory in that Australian Cup.

“People are still coming up to me in 2024 to talk about the Australian Cup, it’s a testament to how he captured the imagination of so many people, which says a lot about his career,” he said.

‘It’s a very sad day. It was a shock when Ross [Cole] He called me and told me. I was moved to tears.

“It is a very, very sad day, but we must reflect on what he has achieved.”

Lonhro was a son of Octagonal, who won the Cox Plate and the Australian Cup.
