TIM HOWARD: Why is arrogant Tyreek Hill to blame for his run-in with police? Where was that NFL support when Colin Kaepernick knelt?

Tyreek Hill was dragged from his car and handcuffed by police officers in Miami on Sunday.

My initial reaction when I saw the body camera footage of Tyreek Hill’s arrest by Miami-Dade police was simple: Here we go again. There are certain players who can’t get out of their own way. They’re always in trouble. And it’s always someone else’s fault.

Let’s be clear: this whole incident was provoked by Tyreek. If you break the law, if you do something stupid, have some respect and humility.

If you make a mistake, if you drive recklessly without your seat belt on, then at the very least, approach the officer politely and roll down your window. What if he doesn’t? What if he resists? Problems happen.

But that’s Tyreek Hill. He doesn’t have enough humility, he’s too arrogant. That’s what got him into this position in the first place. He should have acted completely differently. Thankfully, he’s now admitted it.

The Dolphins star has been on a charm offensive since the incident. Of course he’s going to do everything he can to sensationalize this story. But what’s really interesting? The Miami Dolphins and NFL players have said they support Hill.

The same people who blacklisted Colin Kaepernick. He knelt in protest against police brutality.

We’re hearing that same message after Hill was handcuffed. Apparently it’s okay to protect players now, but Colin Kaepernick still isn’t.

I support the fight to end police brutality against the African American community.

I like good police officers and I hate bad ones. Some of my childhood friends ended up in the police and became corrupt. I don’t like them, they are bad people.

However, I like good police officers. And the fact is that they are in a position of authority. Of course, they sometimes abuse that position, but I respect good police officers and good law enforcement.

I have never been a victim of brutality, but I am the father of a wonderful young man who thinks freely and questions many things in our society: authority, his mother, his teachers, everyone.

Hill was arrested by police shortly before the Dolphins' season opener against the Jaguars.

That’s what teenagers do. I like that about him, I think it will help him. But not when a policeman pulls you over.

I tell him all the time: if you get stopped, the most important thing is to get home alive. You’re a mixed-race person, you wear your hair natural. So keep your hands in the 10 and 2 position, roll down all the windows, turn on the interior lights, and don’t make any sudden movements.

Why? Because I can’t rely on the good cop to show up any night. I have to make sure my son shows me respect. This is America, and as the father of a young man who just turned 18, this is my reality.

I’ve never had the chance to meet Kaepernick, but I would love to. There aren’t many people who have the courage to take a stand like he did.

Kaepernick is a very strong-willed character and will have his moment. But the former 49ers quarterback has been exiled from the NFL since 2016. Tyreek Hill will be back on the field Thursday night. Hopefully he’s learned some important lessons.

Mauricio Pochettino is officially the new coach of the United States national team and the last few days will have taught him everything he needs to change ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The United States was defeated by Canada and then tied with New Zealand. What was evident? These players need more fight, more arrogance, more courage and more determination.

When we lost 2-0 to Canada, my expectations were simple: at least we’d start kicking people’s butts and letting them know this wasn’t going to be easy. Instead? It was a cakewalk for Jesse Marsch’s team.

That doesn’t mean the U.S. national team can’t play expansive soccer, but the foundation of any team has to be fighting. It doesn’t matter who’s injured, it doesn’t matter if we have a coach or not.

Pochettino must demand that as a basic requirement. And if the players don’t respond to the call? Identify someone who does and become an example.

I’ve had coaches in the past whose message was: if you want to get on this team, play like him.

The problem for Pochettino is time. It is expected that in four games his mark on this team will be evident.

By then we should have some clear indications of how the manager wants to play and how he wants to use certain players.

But look at the calendar: four games is a long time until 2026. He needs to get to work immediately.
