TikTok users can once again share songs from artists including Olivia Rodrigo and Ariana Grande after settling a dispute with Universal.

The world’s largest record label said Chinese-owned TikTok did not offer a fair deal, and in February it removed millions of songs from the video-sharing app followed by payments and use of music created by artificial intelligence.

Universal had said TikTok paid its songwriters and artists “a fraction” of what other social media companies made to stream their music.

But yesterday the companies said they were working “quickly” to get the songs back on the app.

And they will work together to ensure that advances in AI ‘protect human art and the economy that flows to those artists’ as musicians become increasingly angry that AI-developed songs go viral.

Universal controls a third of the world’s songs, including hits by Taylor Swift, Adele and Rodrigo.
