An image from the scene in Queen Square shows the car apparently went through the highway guardrails and landed in the basement alleyway that separates the hotel from the street.

The image also shows debris, including large chunks of stones and bricks, strewn across the alley. The guardrail section where the vehicle collided has been removed and sealed.

People walking by can be seen smiling in bewilderment at the situation.

A woman, Emily, 47, was visiting her London family for Mother’s Day lunch when she saw the crash.

She said bbc west:’We thought it might have been a small fire but we looked over the railing and there was a whole car set up there and people were making jokes about parking; you can’t really see how it got there.

“There was a fairly large section of the railings that were broken and some of the stonework had been damaged as well, so you could see that it must have been a pretty heavy impact.”

A hotel spokesperson told MailOnline they were unable to comment on the situation today.

The hotel remains open for business.
