Tiger Woods fights off the elements to get into the third round at The Masters after making the cut

Date:

Tiger Woods battles the elements to slip back into his third round at The Masters after making the cut with difficulty – thanks to a helping hand from close friend Justin Thomas – on a roaring Augusta day

Tiger Woods braced himself for the cold as he headed into the third round of The Masters on Saturday afternoon after being cut narrowly just hours earlier.

The five-time winner had battled through torrential rain and high winds to approach the weekend in the morning – with the help of his friend Justin Thomas – but had another long run in the afternoon.

Woods was forced to start early on Saturday morning after his second run was cut short on Friday after a roaring kickoff and he took round three off the tenth tee at 1.06pm EST / 6.06pm BST after Augusta Nationals officials embraced Starting with two tees in an effort to complete the play.

Woods’ round three round wrapped up on a gloomy Georgia day, and it was as cold as the weather.

The 15-time major winner made the opening bogey five times on Camellia, falling 17 shots off the pace of leader Brooks Koepka.

Woods had fallen inside the cut-off mark Saturday morning during his second round with a neat little birdie on the 15th, draining a putt from downtown.

However, a bogey on the 17th left him needing to par on the 18th but the great golfer was just off the tee, overshooting his drive into the trees.

He was unable to get himself out of trouble landing another shot leaving him in danger.

Woods was left to play the agonizing waiting game once again at the clubhouse with Thomas and Song Jae-im on the track, both of whom have the potential to influence the cutting line.

If either gave up a shot and fell for a three-way match, the cut line would move in Woods’ favor, expanding his potential final appearance for the Masters.

But the 15-run major winner was bailed out by Pal Thomas after his fellow American also dropped shots on the 17th and 18th to go down to fours and cause the expected cut streak to three more, ironically losing it himself.

His miracle cut saw him tying Fred Kebbles and Gary Player for the record for most consecutive cuts made at The Masters at 23.

However, it is not clear if he will have a chance to extend that number and take a solo lead after he admitted in his pre-tournament press conference that he was not sure how many more Masters he had left.

He notably made his return to Augusta last year, just 14 months after losing his right leg in a horrific car accident in February of 2021.

Despite the ups and downs of the prestigious Georgia tournament, Woods struggled through the pain and stiffness of his leg to make the cut significantly.

But he has continued to battle pain from injuries to his surgically repaired leg over the past 12 months.

Woods, who previously admitted his game will be limited to Grand Slams and possibly other tournaments, has hinted that it may be his last outing of the year at Magnolia Lane.

“I don’t know how much there is in me,” the five-time Masters winner said in his pre-tournament press conference on Tuesday. Just to be able to appreciate the time and cherish the memories.

“I’m very lucky to have a leg. Mobility and stamina – going forward will never be the same. I can’t prepare and play as many tournaments as I’d like but that’s okay and I’m OK with that.

Despite his exciting comeback, Woods’ competitive appearances have been limited through 2022.

Woods has only managed nine rounds in 2022 due to complications around the limb-threatening injuries he sustained in his car accident the previous year.

Woods last competed on the PGA Tour in February at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, where he had a four-par 67 in the final round, his lowest score in the competition since his return.

Prior to the Genesis Invitational, Woods had not performed in a tournament with a cut since The Open last July.
