Spectators of an animal circus show in China fled Friday for their lives in horror after a tiger escaped from his cage during the show.

Footage shows the beast jumping on the top of the enclosure, which was discovered before leaping to freedom in Henan province in central China.

The animal, reportedly a young tiger, was hit by cars after breaking away from the circus gang and died according to the local zoo.

The tiger made the desperate escape on Friday around 9 am during a show in the Yuanyang district in Xinxiang.

It ran into a nearby corn field after it had run out of its cage, said the propaganda bureau of the Yuanyang Communist Party Committee.

The tiger was caught after the police and local officials had hunted it for more than 12 hours.

Officers used drones and thermographic cameras to locate the animal.

The beast received a general anesthetic after it was found in the wheat field and taken to the Xinxiang zoo.
