One million public sector workers will get a pay rise of around six per cent this year after the Prime Minister accepted the pay review body’s recommendations.
Doctors, teachers, prison officers and soldiers are among those who will benefit from the pay increase, but savings will come from existing budgets, meaning cuts must be sought elsewhere.
Luisa Clarence-Smith reports that education union leaders have said they are prepared to call off the strikes after teachers were offered a 6.5 percent pay increase.
