Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Meta is evidence a new tagging feature for Threads that’s like hashtags, but not exactly. Yes, you’ll use a hashtag to create or add to a thread’s conversation, but instead of appearing as a tagged word, Threads turns it into a blue text hyperlink. Australian users will be able to try it out for the first time in the initial “limited test” before it is launched on a larger scale.
When you type a “#” in the post text field, a card appears with the topic you are tagging or similar ones. Below, each of the topics comes with a count of posts about it, just like Instagram does.
Those with the new Threads tagging feature can only add a single topic to a post at a time, which will likely limit anyone who wants to spam their posts for better reach. But again, this could be a good thing, especially if you like the clean look that Threads has (for now), or for anyone who hates online hashtags. Meta says it will continue to work on the feature as time goes on, so this first version probably won’t be its final form.
