‘I was completely stunned’: Sam Neill admits he had no idea what he was doing while filming Thor: Love and Thunder because he doesn’t ‘understand’ Marvel characters

Sam Neill is puzzled by his role in Thor: Love and Thunder because he doesn’t understand the Marvel characters.

The 73-year-old actor returns to the franchise with a brief appearance as an Asgardian performer who plays Thor’s father Odin, but finds the Marvel Cinematic Universe a “complete mystery.”

Sam – who also played the same role on Thor: Ragnarok – told Australian radio station Nova: “I never understood any of the Thor movies, in fact the whole Marvel universe is a complete mystery to me.

“I mean, I was standing next to Jenny Morris (on the set of Thor: Ragnarok) and I said, ‘Do you know what planet we’re on?’ Frankly, I was completely baffled.

“I came back and I was stunned again, I did my part, I don’t know who exactly is playing who because they kind of switch roles.”

Neill will be joined in the film by Matt Damon, Luke Hemsworth and Melissa McCarthy, who will play Asgardian versions of Loki, Thor and Hela respectively in a nod to the scene in Thor: Ragnarok.

Russell Crowe will also appear in the film as Zeus after being spotted with other cast members during the shoot.

The Gladiator star said, “Now I’m going on my bike, I’m going to the Disney-Fox studios… and around 9:15 am I’ll be Zeus in Thor 4.

“It’s my last day of Zeus-ing over.”

In the fourth film in the Thor franchise, Chris Hemsworth returns in the title role and Natalie Portman returns as Jane Foster.

Christian Bale and Chris Pratt will also star as Gorr the God Butcher and Peter Quill/Star-Lord, respectively.
