Thomas Tuchel feels it will be tough for Chelsea to compete with Man City and Liverpool next season

Thomas Tuchel claims Chelsea will still find it “difficult” to compete with Man City and Liverpool next season, even if they “add one or two key players” this summer.

  • Chelsea are set to finish third in the Premier League heading into the final day
  • They managed to keep pace with Liverpool and Man City early in the season.
  • However, they have been drastically reduced in the second half of the season.
  • Thomas Tuchel feels his team will have a hard time competing with the top two next term.

Thomas Tuchel admits Chelsea may find it difficult to bridge the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City, even if they secure a couple of “key” signings once government sanctions are lifted.

“It’s going to be very difficult because even if we keep the team and maybe have the opportunity to add one or two key players, it would already be difficult.” Perhaps even very difficult. We are still not sure if we will play the same season again,” said the Chelsea manager.

“It was an incredible season from (City and Liverpool) and in the end I’m not lying to myself.”

Chelsea heads into the final day and one game with Watford secured third. But they are 18 points behind Liverpool in second place.

They already face losing defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, with Tuchel claiming Chelsea will never catch up with the teams above as they ‘fight’ with ‘consistency (and) determination’ in the other penalty area.

‘The numbers we produce from our offensive players don’t allow us to outperform and we need to outperform if we want to get closer to the top two teams. I’m not pointing fingers, I’m not blaming anyone,” Tuchel said.

If we stay in the group, we will try to solve it with these players. Is it necessary to bring more offensive players around the box to create more distractions, to create more space? Can we put more pressure on the players? Do we rotate too much? There are many options.’

The sanctions currently mean Chelsea cannot sell or sign players, or award new contracts.

‘Perhaps we already suffered from the delay. But we will try to have our impact. We have a strong opinion about what is missing and what we need. We will try to find it and give our opinion and fight for it,’ added Tuchel.
