Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel admits he would rather see Cristiano Ronaldo stay in Italy than return to the Premier League at Manchester United.
Tuchel responded to Juventus boss Max Allegri’s confirmation that Ronaldo is on his way after three seasons in Turin.
United are on pole position to sign the 36-year-old star who left the club for a record career with Real Madrid in 2009.
Cristiano Ronaldo could make a stunning return to Manchester United this summer
“I don’t know if it’s good if he plays for one of our rivals,” Tuchel said. “I coped very well with the loss when he was playing in Italy and not playing for us.
“If he ends up in the Premier League it will be good for the Premier League and it shows how competitive and how difficult this competition is. At the same time, it will make life more difficult for us.’
Chelsea paid £97.5million to sign their top target Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan and are still in the market, with interest in versatile French defender Jules Kounde of Sevilla and Spanish midfielder Saul Niguez of Atletico Madrid.
Thomas Tuchel has admitted Ronaldo’s arrival would make Chelsea’s life more difficult this season
“We’ve got some ideas and we’re trying,” Tuchel said. ‘Not all decisions are made. I am happy with the squad as it is and I am very confident that we are absolutely competitive at a high level, but all eyes are open and we are aware of all situations.
“You never know in football, but at the moment we are focused on the game at Liverpool and then there aren’t many days left.”
Kurt Zouma’s anticipated exit in a move to West Ham is expected to accelerate the attack on Kunde.
Zouma will not be part of Chelsea’s roster against Liverpool on Saturday as he is in France on what Tuchel called ‘personal problems’.
“Kurt is not with us, but not because of negotiations,” Tuchel said. “He has some personal problems to resolve and we have given him permission to travel to France. Negotiations are underway between West Ham and Chelsea about Kurt, but I don’t know where it will lead and we’ll just have to wait and see.”
