(autotag)Carlos Prates(/autotag) received a $50,000 bonus for a sick knockout of (autotag)Li Jingliang(/autotag) at UFC 305 on Saturday.
But if the UFC brass in charge of selecting bonuses had seen a photo of Colin Murty’s knockout in Perth, Australia, before their decision, they might have been inclined to give Prates even more, or send Murty something.
The shooter
A career photojournalist who worked for Getty Images via Agence France-Presse, Murty has an extensive resume that stretches back more than 40 years, but you won’t find much MMA on his CV. That’s what will make those who appreciate good photography, especially good sports photography, love this image even more.
(And if you’re tempted to say, “Oh, he probably just has a really good camera,” then please walk away. He does. Of course he does. And he also has the kind of eye and instincts that can lead to a crazy image like this. Most of the rest of us don’t, no matter how much our iPhones lie to us. #SupportRealPhotographers.)
The fight
Prates opened the PPV main card with a stunning knockout of Jingliang late in the second round. It was the first time “The Leech” had been knocked out in a career that stretches back 17 years.
The result
Watch the moment Prates turned off Jingliang’s lights below.
Let’s take a look at the replay.
Absurd, isn’t it?
Prates’ win was his 10th straight, the last nine of which were by knockout, including his first three in the UFC.
