A popular Queensland bakery has just earned the title of the best sausage roll in the country.
Kenliworth Bakery on the Sunshine Coast beat off fierce competition with its sausage rolls to be named ‘Best in Australia’ at the Wotif 2024 Uniquely Australia Awards.
The travel app’s annual awards span six distinctly Australian experiences and are a guide to the country’s best “local gems”.
The pastry institution behind the award-winning sausage roll is already famous for its scones, cakes and a viral “coffee in a doughnut” that has fans queuing for hours to get their hands on.
But there is the $25, “impressively long” one-kilogram sausage roll (which also comes in a smaller size for $5), which Australians have driven for hours to try, and which has earned top marks in Wotif’s most competitive category.
Owner Jenna Sanders’ “incredibly elaborate” creation is a giant log of golden, butter-smothered dough encasing a perfectly rich, savory sausage filling.
Ms Sanders spoke to FEMAIL and said her “secret family recipe” has been passed down through three generations and uses oats rather than just breadcrumbs.
‘Oats absorb flavour very well, which is one of the many reasons why our sausage roll is so popular.’

Jenna Sanders of Kenliworth Bakery won the award, which was the most hotly contested of Wotif’s six categories, with the most Australian votes.
The handmade sausage rolls are made without any machinery and are baked fresh every day.
If you manage to eat Australia’s best sausage roll in one sitting (and all the ketchup it requires), the bakery will even give you your money back.
But Kenliworth’s head baker and owner thinks it is “sacrilege” to use any tomato sauce on a sausage roll: “A good sausage roll doesn’t need sauce.”
Jenna said they sell around 2,000 of the popular buns during a standard week, and even more during school holidays, and that she can easily finish one of the 1kg buns in one sitting.
The popular bakery also enjoys a cult following for its “amazing” 1kg doughnuts, including jam and cream and “strawberry snake”, of which 5,000 are sold every Saturday.
Kenliworth Bakery beat out fellow finalists including beloved South African baker Banana Boogie Bakery for the country’s best sausage roll as voted for by Australians at Wotif’s 2024 annual awards.
Other state finalists in the best sausage roll category included Bourke Street Bakery (NSW), Rolling Pin (VIC), Ben’s Bakehouse (NT), Emu Lane (WA), Three Mills Bakery (ACT), Banana Boogie (SA) and Summer Kitchen (TAS).
Thousands of Australians who entered the Wotif Awards also voted in five other categories including: Best Finger Bun, Best Hotel Bar, Best Surf Club, Best Viewpoint and Best Regional Museum.
Humble Bakery, a cult Sydney food destination in Surry Hills, took home Australia’s best finger bun award for its Instagram-famous pink-glazed sticky buns.
Other Wotif Award winners included The Terrace Rooftop Bar (QLD) for Best Hotel Bar, Henley Surf Life Saving Club (SA) for Best Surf Club and Wineglass Bay Lookout (TAS) for Best Lookout in Australia.
Travel expert Rebecca Hurley said the Uniquely Aussie Awards aim to highlight the country’s best experiences and provide travel inspiration ahead of the warmer months.

“With thousands of entries across six categories, the awards show that Australians are eager to share their favourite local trips,” he said.
‘However, it was the classic sausage roll that caused the most debate, taking the title of the category with the most votes from Australians.’
Those tempted to visit one of Kenliworth Bakery’s branches might be convinced by one Australian who endured a two-hour walk just to sample the “incredibly good” treats.
“I’ve never been so impressed with a sausage roll. It’s fantastic, it made my day,” he said.
