A book lover has issued a warning about a home decorating mistake everyone regrets.
A recent trend has seen people buying book-shaped vases for their shelves and storing fresh flowers in them.
Sarah, an American woman, revealed that an acquaintance of hers used her vase religiously only to find mold inside every book on the shelf.
“That book-shaped vase that you can place between other books will make your books moldy if you put water or flowers in it,” Sarah said in a TikTok.
‘You will lose your books, don’t put water or flowers in that vase. Use bookmarks or artificial flowers, but do not use flowers.

The vase is also dangerous because it has two large, flat glass sides that apply pressure and filling it too much could cause the vase to break.
“It’s too flat and thin, there’s a reason most flower vases are round,” said one commenter.
It is best to display the vase elsewhere as a regular decorative item rather than next to books.
Some shared their experiences of placing plants near their shelves.
“I put a terracotta pot on top of a book and a year later I had a hardback mold circle halfway up,” one revealed.

“I only put real flowers near my books once I’ve dried them completely and there’s no more moisture,” said another.
“Crying in Queensland, my books get moldy anyway,” said one Australian.
Others offered different ways to style your vases.
‘Lego flowers and pale blue translucent Lego studs!’ one said.
“I was thinking about fairy lights or marbles or something,” another added.
‘I have bookmarks and some stationery in mine, how perfect!’ said a third.
