This is when an abandoned newborn baby girl was found alive after being dumped on a rubbish pile in Indonesia.

The girl was found by a resident on Tuesday morning as she returned from the rice paddies in Sungai Raya village in Kubu Raya regency.

The baby’s cries had caught the woman’s attention, and she hurried to report the discovery to local authorities.

Officials arrived to inspect the garbage bag and found a wailing child still wrapped in blood and bits of placenta inside.

She was said to have been left there shortly after the mother gave birth and police believe she was less than 12 hours old when she was found.

Deputy Inspector Ade, head of public information for the Kubu Raya Police Department, said: ‘The baby was found alive by residents here. She was wrapped in a black plastic bag and thrown in the trash.

“She was alive, so she was taken to the hospital, where nurses are taking care of her. She is very lucky. I don’t think she would have survived if the resident hadn’t found her.’

The police officer added that this was the sixth case of abandonment in the Kubu Raya Regency in recent months.

The abandoned baby was taken to Nabasa Maternity Hospital for treatment and supervision. She will then be placed in state care.

Ade said: “We are still conducting an investigation to find out who dumped the innocent baby here. She was very young, maybe only a few hours old, but no more than half a day.

“We ask residents who have information to help us by reporting this to the police, so that this matter can be resolved quickly. Maybe they saw someone nearby earlier that morning.’

Kaya Raya is a regency, an administrative division, of West Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The wider province is part of the island of Borneo, the largest island in Asia.

It is politically divided between Malaysia and Brunei in the north and Indonesia in the south.

Although female infanticide is less common in Indonesia than in other countries on the continent, the country is still working hard to reduce infant mortality due to other factors.

A 2020 UNICEF report revealed state efforts to improve birth registration in recent decades, helping children access social services and lead good lives.

Nevertheless, about 90% of children, especially girls and women, experience some form of poverty during their lifetime, the report said.

The OECD noted that women ‘are poorer throughout their lives and experience disadvantages in school and especially in the labor market’.
