The trailer for a new Netflix sci-fi thriller has been criticized by fans as “awful” and “absolute rubbish”, despite the film featuring a top Hollywood star.

Atlas will premiere on Netflix on May 24 and is produced by Jennifer Lopez, who will also play the film’s protagonist, data analyst Atlas Shepherd.

López is producing Atlas through his production company Nuyorican Productions and his agreement with Netflix, where they will produce a series of films, television series and scripted and unscripted content with a focus on supporting diverse talent in the industry.

Atlas centers on a brilliant data analyst who deeply distrusts artificial intelligence and joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past.

The sci-fi adventure also stars Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla and Mark Strong.

Lopez said of the film, “I loved that it’s a big sci-fi action movie, but at its core it’s a friendship story and, in a way, a love story.”

“I always see everything as a love story, but this is a different kind of love between two beings who connect in disastrous circumstances and teach each other how to be more human.”

Netflix released a full trailer for Atlas on April 23, with a nearly three-minute trailer introducing us viewers to a highly advanced technological universe, as well as some of the main characters.

However, some fans have complained that the trailer reveals too much of the film, while others called the plot “dreadful” and “forgettable popcorn watching.”

It comes after Netflix fans criticized a 2024 film starring Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson as the ‘dumbest’ they’ve ever seen, after it was given new life by uploading it to the streaming platform.

Sony’s superhero movie Madame Web came under fire and criticism, with some calling it an “embarrassing disaster” and “the worst comic book movie of all time” when it hit theaters in February.
