But an unofficial ceasefire agreement between the two enemies took effect around midnight.

Mr. Qatati was around 20 years old and a volunteer in Hamas medical services. A spokesman for the Health Ministry says he was shot in the chest in southern Gaza.

It would be at least the second doctor to be killed by Israeli fire during months of border protests. Today's demonstration was smaller than those of previous weeks.

The Israeli army said that a few thousand "rioters" gathered at various sites along the border, with soldiers using live fire and other riot deterrent tactics.
