An elderly white woman lost her cool with her black neighbor after the latter refused to turn off the air conditioning.
A video posted to TikTok that has received nearly 4 million views has a telling caption that sums up the absurdity of the request seen in the clip: “What it’s like to be a black woman living in a retirement community… Calling the police because I have my air conditioning on.”
In the video, a neighbor can be seen on the door camera video approaching in hopes of speaking to the resident of the home.
“Hi, how are you?” the white woman says into the camera’s intercom. “Yes, I need to talk to you,” she continues.
An elderly white woman lost her cool with her black neighbor after the latter refused to turn off the air conditioning.
The woman explains to the occupant that it is necessary to turn off the air conditioning unit because there was an air leak above the houses below.
But the black tenant calmly explains that she can’t do anything because she’s not at home.
The situation escalates almost immediately when the white “Karen” threatens to call the police to resolve the problem.
“Well then I’m going to have to call the police to come out here because they told you not to turn on the air conditioning and your air conditioning is running and it’s going to the unit downstairs,” the neighbor said.
The white ‘Karen’ escalates the situation almost immediately and threatens to call the police to resolve the problem.
The black woman then explains why the air conditioning should not work and says that she had spoken to her landlord about the problem.
However, the white woman continues to argue with her neighbor, saying that the air conditioning is on and leaking onto her house.
“When can you get there?” the white neighbor asks, to which the homeowner replies: “In 30 minutes.”
Incredibly, the black woman, who remains out of sight the entire time, managed to remain calm and even agreed to return home to turn off the air conditioning.
Those who responded to the video were irritated by what they had seen.
“If I pay rent, no one is going to tell me I can’t turn on the air conditioning,” wrote one user.
“Why are most Karens retired?” another asked. “It’s like they’re so bored they just hang around and start doing stuff with people.”
“I swear, retired Karens are the worst! My neighbor Karen was going through my trash to see if I was throwing away recyclables,” a third shared, showing sympathy.
