Thibaut Courtois has claimed he was “dying for years” to join Real Madrid as the club respond to Kylian Mbappe’s shocking snub of the Spanish giants.

The 23-year-old Paris Saint-Germain star striker was expected to join Los Blancos this summer on a free transfer when his contract in the French capital expired.

However, he has finally agreed a mammoth new three-year deal at the Parc des Princes that will make him the highest-paid footballer in the world, at around £1m a week, and LaLiga will file a complaint about the deal.

Spain’s reaction has been surprise, shock and anger, and Real Madrid goalkeeper Courtois, speaking ahead of the club’s Champions League final against Liverpool on Saturday, insisted he knows the value of playing for the historical club.

He said: ‘Each player makes his own decisions and choices, and no one can know why he makes them.

“Personally, I’ve been dying for years, because I wanted to come to Real Madrid, and now I know how special it is to play for Real Madrid”.

Real was prepared to give Mbappe a £110m signing fee and £20m a year after-tax salaries, with a total investment of around £300m in the deal, according to reports.

After signing the contract, Mbappe said: “I would like to announce that I have chosen to extend my contract at Paris Saint-Germain and of course I am delighted.”

“I am convinced that I can continue to grow in a club that gives everything necessary to perform at the highest level. I am also delighted to continue playing in France, the country where I was born, where I grew up and where I made a name for myself.’
