A police officer in Georgia was fatally shot while investigating a suspicious vehicle, and a pursuit of the suspects is underway.

Gwinnett County police officer Antwan Toney, 30, was shot Saturday while responding to a call about a suspicious car parked in a residential area near a high school in Snellville.

Police say that Toney and other officers were approaching the vehicle parked in a neighborhood near Shiloh High School when shots fired from the interior around 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

The other officers returned the fire and pulled Toney out to cover it, and the suspicious vehicle accelerated.

Toney was transferred to the Gwinnett Medical Center, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Meanwhile, the suspect vehicle crashed a mile from the shooting scene.

It is believed that up to four suspects fled the scene of the accident on foot.

A witness on the scene could only describe one of the suspects, saying he was a black man about six feet long, with long dreadlocks, wearing green sweatpants and a white T-shirt.

SWAT teams and K-9 units flooded the area, consisting of residential subdivisions and wooded areas.

The police are not sure if any of the suspects were injured when the police responded to the fire.

Toney joined the Gwinnett County police three years ago. He is originally from California and celebrated his birthday a few days ago.

It is the fifth death of the agency in the performance of duty.

Snellville is about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta.
